The Idol worshipped here is lord Ganesh, so the temple’s name is Manakula Vinayagar Temple, which means the “God Ganesh near the sandy pond”.

The Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple is steeped in fascinating lore. One tale dates back to French rule in 1688 when the French built a fort beside the temple. They attempted to remove the Vinayagar idol (Lord Ganesh Idol) by throwing it into the sea, but each time they did, the idol miraculously reappeared. Astonished, the French abandoned their efforts and became devoted followers of Lord Ganesha.

Another story, nearly 300 years old, tells that there is a saint who achieved samadhi at this sacred site. Since then, the temple has been considered an auspicious place for newborns.

The temple’s exquisite architectural design includes a mandapam, a prahara, and a raja gopuram, where various deities are enshrined.
