Day 1: Reporting Day at Leh

The moment you land at Leh Airport, you’ll be welcomed by surprisingly picturesque Leh Airport. It’s advisable to wear warm clothes and woolen gloves at the time of landing, as you’ll feel the abrupt drop in temperature. You can relax in our guesthouse and explore the Leh market in the evening. It would be easier on the trek if you get used to the cold temperature in Leh because there will be a drop in the temperature henceforth at the Zanskar Valley.

Day 2: Acclimatization Day

As per the regulations and keeping in mind the health problems that trekkers might face (AMS), anyone doing the Chadar Trek should at least spend two days in Leh  for the body to get fully acclimatized to the weather conditions. Trekkers can spend the day by visiting the places around the city. This makes for a sightseeing day clubbed while simultaneously acclimatizing the body for the trek ahead. Make sure you stay well hydrated.

Day 3: Medical Checkup

Chadar trek is no ordinary trek and therefore the government is very particular with the selection of participants who can undertake the challenging trail. Hence it is mandatory to acquire a medical certification for the same. A clearance certificate upon a medical check-up will be issued by the ALTOA designated medical camp. Only adequately fit participants will be allotted the permission certificate.

Day 4: Drive to Shingra Koma and Trek to Somo Paldar

After a sumptuous breakfast, you will begin your journey to the picturesque Shingra Koma. The drive will give you enough adrenaline as most part of the ride will be offroading. After reaching Shingra Koma, you’ll get off the vehicle and begin your trek to Somo Paldar. You’ll reach your campsite and spend the evening relaxing. Congratulations on completing your first patch of Chadar Trek!

Day 5: Trek to Dib Cave/Tibb

Wake up to a beautiful morning view. After a good brekfast, set out for a trek to Dib. After crossing the astounding views including ravines and gorges, you’ll reach a large cave named Dib. Soak in the beauty of this place. This is where you’ll halt for the night and camp. Make sure you don’t miss the butter tea served at the campsite. Retire for the night.

Day 6: Dib Cave/Tibb to camp at Naerak Frozen Waterfall

Post breakfast, you’ll move ahead for the Naerak Frozen Waterfall. This is undoubtedly the most mesmerizing vista you’ll come across the entire trek. This is the largest waterfall in the area. Photographers will have a great time shooting at a bridge near the waterfall. After spending some quality time here, you can then move towards Naerak, a prominent village of the region. Interact with the locals here and enjoy their culture. Retire for the night at the campsite.

Day 7: Naerak to Tibb

We now start our return journey towards Tibb. While the route would be the same through which you came, the frozen waterfalls might have changed their form. It would appear as if you’re in an entirely new location. Halt for some photographs, engage with the locals and spend some time relaxing. Reach Dib Cave and stay overnight.

Day 8: Tibb to Shingra Koma & Back to Leh

Today would be the last day of our trek. Wake up to a beautiful morning and bid adieu to Tibb. Trek towards Shingra Koma. You’ll be crossing Gyalpo on your way. You will interact with the fauna of the region, if not in person then through their footprints in the snow. Watch out for wildlings like ibex, foxes and if you’re lucky then even snow leopards. Upon reaching Shingra Korma, drive to Leh. Check in to the hotel and retire for the night.

When winter seeps into the valley of Ladakh, the otherwise happening state gets barren, pretty much with no sight of tourists. That’s when a new panorama of Ladakh opens up for the true challenge seekers, adventurers and people who’ve the will to do that not many would dare to! Because trekking on predefined trails is pretty mainstrem, Ladakh offers this unique trek on a frozen river, popularly known as Chadar Trek!

“Chadar”, which means sheet or a blanket refers to the thick frozen slab of ice that forms on River Zanskar and hence the trekking trail came to be known as the Chadar Trek.

The route is a frozen spectacle of ice that sometimes looks like blue glass and sometimes shines golden when few sunrays manage to reach the valley. The trail looks no less than a marvel on a moonlit night, when the entire valley is coloured sparkling white!

Chadar trek takes you from Chilling Village (on the road to Leh) to the hidden villages in the Zanskar Valley along the frozen river. This route has been used for centuries for trade and transportation, and is most reliable in February when the ice is most stable.
