Volcano Eruptions in May 2024: 5 Major Spots Worldwide

As of June 6, 2024, scientists say 46 volcanoes around the world are in a state of “continuing eruption” with several volcano eruptions in May. This doesn’t mean they’re erupting lava every day. 

Instead, it means they’ve had bursts without stopping for more than three months. Usually, there are between 40 and 50 volcanoes in this state. On any given day, about 20 of these are actually erupting.

Take a look at 5 volcanoes ( 3 from Indonesia), that began erupting in May 2024!

1. Indonesia

•  Dempo Volcano

Dempo, a volcano on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, joined the list of volcano eruptions in May on 27th. It continued till June 6th and still counting. This mountain is known for its steep slopes and explosions. It demands overtime monitoring to keep the nearby towns safe. 

• Lewotobi Volcano

Lewotobi Volcano on Flores Island in Indonesia started erupting on December 23, 2023 and continued through volcano eruptions in May and June 2024. On rigorous monitoring and management, the efforts are in place to address volcanic ash and lava, affecting the surrounding regions. 

• Ruang Volcano

Ruang Volcano in Indonesia’s Maluku Islands started erupting on April 16 and remained active.  During the volcano eruptions in May and June 2024 it resulted in air traffic and affected local communities’ safety. Necessary precautions are in place to manage the eruption effectively.

2. Great Sitkin, United States

Great Sitkin in Alaska contributed to volcano eruptions in May, starting on the 25th, and is still strong as of June 6. Located on the Aleutian Islands, Great Sitkin is known for noisy eruptions. Officials are executing necessary precautionary measures. 

3. Ubinas Volcano, Peru

Ubinas in southern Peru, often known for eruptions that pollute the air and affect nearby roads and buildings. The people in charge are working hard to keep everyone safe. 

They have made plans to move people away from danger if needed. Starting the volcano eruptions in May 6, 2024, it continued to be active through June 6.
