About Chapora Fort

The Chapora Fort in Goa is located in the Bardez region of North Goa, near the Chapora River. It is also famous because of the movie “Dil Chahta Hai”, or what people often call “Dil Chahta Hai Fort”. The Chapora Fort is about 700 metres away from the Vagator Beach. According to the legends, Chapora Fort in Goa was ruled by three empires and is the oldest fort.

Chapora Fort History

If you look into the Chapora Fort history, you will find that the Chapora Fort in Goa was restored by Portuguese colonists in 1717 under the reign of Adilshahi. The Sultan Mohammad Adil Shahi built the Chapora Fort, then called “Shahpura Fort”, and used it as a watch post for the Muslim Rulers. After a few decades, the Adilshahi governance fell, and there was a rise of Portuguese colonies that took charge of Goa and rebuilt and restored the fort, which was named Chapora Fort in Goa. 

The primary purpose of this fort was to defend the Portuguese territory against the Marathas; it also had an emergency escape route. After a few years, the Goa Chapora Fort was captured by the Maharaja of Sawantwadi, known to be the oldest enemy of Portuguese colonists, and he ruled only for two years. The Chapora Fort in Goa was seized by Martha rulers most of the time, especially under the reign of Chatrapati Sambhaji Raje Bhonsle, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, in 1684 and 1739. 

There is an exciting story about Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in 1684. It is believed that his army climbed the wall with the help of giant monitor lizards, and impressed by his intellect, the Portuguese Governor surrendered and offered the Goa Chapora Fort without losing a drop of blood of Sambhaji’s army.  

However, the fort was again captured by the Portuguese in 1741 till 1892 and they left Goa in 1961 and passed to India. However, due to many battles, the fort is in ruins today. Even though it is in ruins, the Chapora Fort in Goa is known for its historical battles and is the best location for panoramic sea views. The Architecture Of Chapora Fort In Goa
